Food safety standards are crucial for exporters in the global food industry. Buyers need to know that the food and food ingredients they buy are not tainted or otherwise contaminated, as they are likely to be liable should their customers fall victim to food poisoning. Recent, blatant cases of food contamination in Japan and China have shed a spotlight on the need for globally trusted, third-party inspected food production and safety standards. The ISO 22000 was issued in 2005 to fill this need. Other standards are in place originating in the US and Europe.
